Five coffee stops in West Village & Neighboring

Known as ‘The Village’ to locals, Greenwich village houses some of the most expensive homes in Manhattan. With the area a landmark for bohemian culture, the desirable location is very sought after. Washington Square park is at the center of the neighborhood and provides much needed green space amongst the packed residential quarters. Nestled in the unique streets of the West Village lie many trendy food and coffee spots which offer a local vibe.

Here are our top five coffee shop picks.

Banter
169 Sullivan Street
Founded by former Two Hands baristas and Australian natives, Nick Duckworth and Josh Evans, Banter is a new and exciting Australian café just off Houston. It brings together a delicious restaurant menu with a casual sit-down aesthetic, creating a perfect balance between formal dining and café casual. Banter features a health-conscious menu with items popular in both Australia and the US. The light wood interior and airy aesthetic, along with the beautiful prints lining the walls, gives the whole room a friendly, inviting feel, and the beautifully prepared dishes are not to be missed. From tempting chia pudding bowls to skillfully poured golden lattes or flat whites, there really is something for every discerning New Yorker. Added bonus? Their lovely patio offering airy outdoor seating during the warmer months.

Kobrick Coffee Co.
24 9th Avenue
After roasting beans for nearly a century, Kobrick decided to open a café in the trendy meatpacking in 2015. Yet it feels as if it might have been there forever, with its tasteful and timeless dark wood décor (look up at the ceiling) and deeply comfortable gentleman’s-club-type seating in the small back room. Kobrick makes incredibly good coffee, whether espresso or drip and the place is open late, with coffee joined by cocktails as the drinks of choice. Kobrick is a little piece of Old Manhattan on Ninth Avenue – more 1920 than 20-whatever.

Merriweather Coffee + Kitchen
428 Hudson Street
Inspired by the trendy beach cafés of Australia, Merriweather Coffee + Kitchen is a new standout spot in the picturesque West Village. Large windows paired with the light wood and mint green aesthetic generate a vibrant, welcoming space. Merriweather is always busy during lunch rush, and for good reason. Counter Culture beans are expertly brewed, and the food menu is as delicious as it is unique, with lots of healthy options across the board, including their popular Merriweather Morning Sandwiches and turmeric ginger oatmeal. There is also a wonderful outdoor bench to perch on if the weather is good, and watch the world go by with a refreshing cold brew. Whether meeting friends for lunch or just in need of a delicious drink to-go, Merriweather is your perfect ray of sunshine.

Prodigy Coffee
33 Carmine Street
Prodigy uses their own beans that they roast in conjunction with Gotham Coffee Roasters to create their own signature drinks as well as outstanding traditional brews. When it’s hot try the Frostbite, cold brew over shaved ice, and opt for the Snakebite, melted dark chocolate with a shot of espresso, when the weather cools down. With these potions, and their family of seasonal single origins and blends, it’s easy to have fun experimenting with your taste of coffee here. The six table shop is handsome, with gilded frames and chandeliers composing the space with a polished flare.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Greenwich Village
30 West 8th Street
Stumptown found a new home here in 2013, bringing its signature Portland style and meticulously prepared coffees downtown. This former village bookshop now houses Stumptown’s library of perfectly prepared coffees. The delicious Nitro cold brew is served on tap, with a strong dark and creamy taste reminiscent of a nice Guinness. There’s an adjoining brew bar where you can get any coffee made any way you like, and they play kind hosts with regular tastings there too.
